The War Bride

It's 1940 London, the height of the Blitz best friends Lily (Anna Friel) and Sophie (Julie Cox) work as East End seamstresses.

Despite the nightly bombings they work and play like typical 20 year olds in the capital, until they meet two Canadian servicemen at a dance and fall madly in love.

After a whirlwind romance the two couples marry and the boys are shipped off to the front. It's then that Lily discovers she's expecting Charlie's baby. After the baby is born, mother, child and Sophie receive news from the Canadian Embassy that they are to be shipped across the sea to their new in-laws.

Not knowing where - or what - they are going to, Sophie is relieved to be welcomed into a wealthy and warm family. However, Lily is met with an icy reception from her bitter mother-in-law, Betty (Brenda Fricker) and sister-in-law, Sylvia (Molly Parker). What's even worse, the 'dream ranch' Charlie talked about is actually nothing more than a tiny shack in the middle of nowhere.

What is to become of the two London lasses who have swapped the claustrophobia of blitzed London for the Canadian wilds? What follows is a moving story of resilience and love as the two women push forward with their lives in the face of intense hardship and adversity.
